Ism Ala Mussama

Dear Partners, Collaborators, and Friends,

We write to you from a place of deep resonance — shaped by our countless conversations, our co-evolving questions that question themselves, our co-reflections on lived experience, and moments of collective realisation of beauty within our communities, systems, and societies. Through this journey, our Tamkeen experience has softly revealed new possibles and widened fields of possibilities.

Today, we share our new name that has emerged from within that very vibrant fabric.

Tamkeen Community Foundation for Human Development is now officially:

The name chose itself. It reflects Tamkeen’s essential, processual, self-reflective, and logopoetic nature through a language re-inhabited and rooted in the experiences of those who live them. As such, the name vibrates the vital pulse of the experienced. This is the lived meaning of the expression ism ʿalā musammā — “a name that rests upon the named.” A name becomes true when it mirrors the truth it names:

• “For Our Humanity Foundation” evokes the essence that anchors us in a shoreless flow-field. It speaks of our being and knowing becoming inseparable. Of our sense-of-agency humbled by the realisation that we are the gardeners “and” the garden. And, of our sense-of-self, moved by the wonder of connection — to each other, to our life-sustaining biosphere, and to the whole beyond our conscious grasp.

• “Mirror Of A Humanising Society” recognises the autotelic and self-reflexive process of a becoming together. The mirror of Tamkeen reminds us that humanity is entrusted with its humanity. That a humanising society realises itself from itself into itself. That it expresses itself through emerging social ecosystems of cohesion, co-flourishing and harmony, manifesting the lived answers to the question:

How can our communities, schools, universities, research systems, science, organisations, societal systems, algorithms, governance models, societies and civilisations become expressions and manifestations of our shared humanity?

We continue our journey together – with yakeen (certitude of the soul) and itminaan (tranquillity of the soul) — with a name that calls us, daily, to remember that every step towards the direction of a humanising society is the direction itself.

Our profound gratitude overflows to each of you. Your trust and partnership have been the soil from which this name – “resting upon the named” – has found its pulsating letters.

In trust, humility, gratitude and love.
